Whole Foods Market recently issued a press release in which they announced the creation of a "Whole Trade Guarantee." As outlined in this announcement, products with the Whole Trade Guaranteee will meet a strict set of criteria for products from developing countries to ensure benefits for consumers, producers, and the environment. In addition, one percent of the retail sale of each Whole Trade Guarantee product will go to the Whole Planet Foundation, which fights poverty by providing grants for micro loans for women entrepreneurs.
According to Whole Foods Market's co-founder and CEO John Mackey, "With our shoppers' growing concern about ethical and responsible trade and with our Company's increasing scale and scope, the time is right for Whole Foods Market to help make more of an impact."
The first Whole Trade items that will be available in Whole Foods Market's stores in the U.S. and Canada will primarily be in the grocery and produce departments such as tea, cocoa, bananas, mangoes, rice, sugar, and vanilla. Three of Whole Foods Market's Allegro Coffees (Organic French Roast, Organic Guatemalan, and Organic El Salvador) will also have the Whole Trade Guarantee.
